Summary of LSA Degree Requirements

To qualify for a degree from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, a student must complete a minimum 120 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C). A minimum of 60 credits towards degree must be completed in residence.

Writing
Requirements
(IC, ULWR)

Students fulfill the First-Year Writing Requirement by taking an approved 4 credit course.
The Upper-Level Writing Requirement is generally completed within the students concentration at U-M.

Quantitative
Reasoning
(QR)

Advanced Placement credit cannot be used to meet the QR requirement. Courses transferred from another college or university do not generally carry QR credit, except in the following circumstances:
• QR is considered fulfilled for all science, math, and computer science concentrators who transfer in the prerequisites; or
• Transfer credit of at least three credits for PHYSICS 125, 126, 140, 240 or a statistics course receive QR/1 credit.

Race and
Ethnicity
(RE)

Credits transferred from another college or university do not meet the requirement except by successful petition to the Academic Standards Board.

Language
Requirement
(LR)

Fourth term proficiency in a language other than English is required and may be met by achieving credit in a fourth-term language course with a 2.0 (C) or better.

Area
Distribution
(NS, SS, HU,
MSA, CE)

Students must complete 7 credits in each of the following three areas: Natural Science (NS), Social Science (SS), and Humanities (HU). Students must also complete 3 additional credits in three of the following five areas: (NS), (SS), (HU), Mathematical and Symbolic Analysis (MSA), and Creative Expression (CE) for a total of 9 credits.

Prerequisites

Many concentration programs have prerequisite courses that must be completed before starting course work in the major area of study. The number of prerequisites vary by program, typically (3 to 12 credits), although science concentrations can have as many as 36 credits of prerequisites.

Concentration

Each A.B.or B.S. student must develop a concentration plan in consultation with a concentration advisor, who must also approve it. No more than 60 credits in a concentration may be counted toward the 120 for the degree.
